Scott J. Borrowman
In Brief
Mr. Borrowman is an associate in our Oakland office. He joined the firm in 2007 following a clerkship for Judge Karla R. Spaulding in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. As a judicial clerk, Mr. Borrowman assisted the judge in preparing for hearings and drafting orders in a wide variety of civil and criminal matters.
In law school, Mr. Borrowman served on the editorial board of the BYU Law Review; he also received the John S. Welch Award for Outstanding Legal Writing and the Hugh B. Brown Barristers Award, both of which are awarded by faculty committees to only one graduating student. His law review comment, Sosa v. Alvarez-Machain and Abu Ghraib -- Civil Remedies for Victims of Extraterritorial Torts by U.S. Military Personnel and Civilian Contractors, was published in the BYU Law Review and has been cited in a court decision and numerous scholarly articles.
Representative Matters
Since joining the firm, Mr. Borrowman has represented clients in a variety of products liability, toxic torts, and asbestos lawsuits.
Asbestos
Mr. Borrowman drafted successful motions for summary judgment in a case involving design engineers and alleged exposure to asbestos occurring in Iran.
Mr. Borrowman drafted a successful motion for summary judgment in an asbestos case brought against property owners on whose property an oil company conducted operations.
Mr. Borrowman represents a number of Fortune 500 clients in asbestos product liability and premises liability actions throughout California.
Products Liability
Mr. Borrowman was instrumental in obtaining an order finding that plaintiffs spoliated evidence in a case involving an alleged failure of a seatbelt system in a catastrophic accident.
Toxic Tort
Mr. Borrowman is part of the team handling cases throughout California alleging groundwater contamination by MTBE.
